This body of work in pastel is called The Patty Pan Pastel Series. In the bumps, slopes and curves of the Patty Pan squash I see the endless possibilities for playfulness, uneasiness, calm, or simply for the pure celebration of color. To those not familiar with this type of squash, Patty Pan are yellow, white or green, with a spaceship look about them, except for the scallops. And oh, those scallops… I could happily spend the rest of my days celebrating and drawing those little radial bumps. My journey has carried me far from the true Patty Pan shape and then inexplicably brought me back so close that you might recognize the colors and forms of the squash. An almost finished drawing informs the next drawing, and I carry the lines around in my head where they will stay until the next work is started. In that manner, it is a true series. Sometimes the lines are ultimately erased, discarded or somehow diminished, but frequently they become the form of the image that will describe and define the finished piece. Traditionally, they were known only by their number as I like to give the viewer full opportunity to interpret a piece with little outside influence. Recently, however, I have named some as well, but they always retain their number as part of their identity.
